The difference between regular and organic cheese

The organic fresh market continues to grow. Sustainable food is becoming more popular and the supply is increasing. Organic cheese and regular cheese differ because the cow has a very different life. But what do organic farmers do differently?

  • The cows graze on green and unsprayed pasture.
  • Organic cows get more space than in a conventional farm.
  • The cows get feed without artificial additives.
  • Calves are not given artificial milk, but real milk from the cow.
  • No artificial fertilisers are used for fertilisation.
  • Organic cheese is produced without extra additives.
  • The ripening process is not forced.

Organic cheese is a conscious choice. It is a choice that is better for animal welfare and for the environment. Besides being a responsible cheese, organic cheese is also an incredibly tasty cheese. This is all thanks to the 100% use of products from nature.

Vegetarian or organic cheese

It is important to note that an organic cheese is not the same as a vegetarian cheese. In the production of organic cheese, animal rennet can simply be used. With vegetarian cheese, only vegetarian rennet is used.

However, it is often taken into account in the production of organic cheese and the farmer often uses vegetarian rennet.

Frequently asked questions

What is organic cheese?

Organic cow's cheese comes from organically farmed cows. These cows spend a lot of time outside and have plenty of room to move around inside. During the production of the cheese, only organic products are used. This makes organic cheese a conscious choice! Better for the environment and animal welfare.

What do organic dairy cows eat?

Organic dairy cows are naturally fed fresh grass. They are also fed organic roughage and silage. Of this food, the farmer has to grow at least 60% himself or get it from the region. Many farmers therefore grow the food themselves. This is to reduce food miles.

Is organic cheese vegetarian?

Organic cheese is not necessarily vegetarian, this is often the case but not always. By default, cheese is made with the rennet from the stomach of a calf. The calf is not killed for this, this is a by-product of slaughter. If viewed strictly, the cheese is not vegetarian, but this is a personal decision, however.
