Kernhem
Kernhem is a Dutch cheese with a washed rind. The cheese was developed by NIZO in Ede. Normally, cheeses are named after the area or town they come from. However, the cheese "Ede" or "Eden cheese" did not sound appetising enough. For this reason, the cheese was named after the Kernhem estate, in which the NIZO was located.
Washed rind cheeses, also called red bacteria cheeses, are semi-hard cheeses. The rind of the cheese is regularly washed with lukewarm, salty water, among other things, during the ripening process. This process gives Kernhem a unique full creamy and piquant flavour.
Serving Kernhem
Kernhem is a delicious piece of cheese for lunch. Of course, it is also possible to serve this special cheese over drinks or just eat it on the go.
