Cheese fondue dipping tips

French bread is the most common ingredient to dip in the melted cheese. But, of course, there are many other tasty alternatives. Think for instance of fresh cherry tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, cauliflower and broccoli florets. Also try cubed ham or salami. Turkish bread and rye bread are great alternatives to baguette. Plenty of choice to vary!

Making cheese fondue

Below, we take you through a few steps on how to easily make the basic recipe for a cheese fondue. Per person, you can assume 200 gram cheese. The quantities below are geared to cheese fondue for 4 people (800 grams of fondue cheese).

  • Bring the cheese to room temperature.
  • Grate the cheese or cut into very small pieces.
  • Crush a clove of garlic and rub the fondue pan with it. For a stronger garlic flavour, you can also crush the garlic and cook with it.
  • Pour 250ml of dry white wine into the pan and slowly bring to the boil until slightly bubbly.
  • Add a small splash of lemon juice (1 tablespoon is enough).
  • Add the cheese little by little and let it melt while stirring.
  • Do not heat and cook the cheese for too long or it will get a rubbery texture.
  • Flavour the fondue as desired with salt, pepper and nutmeg.
  • You can bind cheese mixture with cornstarch and flour if necessary until combined.
